“Galerie du Louvre” Original Etching by Israël Silvestre, Paris, 17th Century
This rare original etching by Israël Silvestre (1621–1691) depicts a panoramic view of the Galerie du Louvre, an iconic section of the royal palace along the Seine in Paris. Known for his architectural precision and detailed urban scenes, Silvestre captures a lively 17th-century Paris, with bustling boats, grand facades, and pedestrians animating the riverbanks. The French title translates to “View and Perspective of the Louvre Gallery, in which are the portraits of Kings, Queens, and the most Illustrious of the Kingdom.”
This particular impression is noted as an épreuve d’état—a proof before the numbered edition—making it highly collectible. Signed “Israel ex.” in the plate and numbered in pencil 2/111, with a handwritten annotation identifying it as an original proof from the third state, prior to issue.
Condition is very good with expected age toning. Paper shows minor foxing but no tears or repairs. This historic print is a remarkable artifact from the early modern era and a striking representation of royal Paris.
